YAZ® Side Effects

The decision to have children is very important and, because many couples recognize this, they do not want to risk becoming pregnant before they are emotionally and financially ready to take on that responsibility. While waiting for the right time to have children, many women opt to take oral contraceptives, or birth control pills, to significantly decrease their chance of conception, but at what cost?

YAZ®, YASMIN®, and Ocella

Yaz and Yasmin are prescription birth control medications manufactured by the German pharmaceutical company, Bayer. Ocella, also an oral contraceptive, is the generic brand of Yasmin and is distributed by Barr Laboratories. They all contain drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, as opposed to other progestins.

What They Are Supposed To Do

According to its official website, Yaz is prescribed to:

  • Prevent pregnancy (99 percent effective when taken as directed);
  • Treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms (PMDD), but not PMS; and
  • Treat moderate acne in women 14 years-old or older.

Yasmin and Ocella are simply prescribed to prevent pregnancy. Like Yaz, these birth control medications are also 99 percent effective as long as they are taken as directed.

All oral contraceptives include a warning stating that smoking while taking birth control pills increases the risk for severe cardiovascular side effects. Women are aware of this risk, but what about other risks that the pharmaceutical company didn’t warn about?

Dangerous Side Effects

The use of drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives like Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella has been shown to increase the risk of a number of serious health problems, including:

  • Blood clots;
  • Stroke;
  • Heart Attack;
  • Thromboemolism;
  • Pulmonary embolism; and
  • Gallbladder disease.

Despite the documented health problems caused by these medications, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not taken them off the market. They have, however, issued Bayer two warnings concerning misrepresentation of the drug’s benefits and manufacturing violations that may have led to unsafe batches of Yaz and Yasmin entering the U.S.

Misinformation and Misrepresentation

Pharmaceutical companies are required to test the safety of their drugs as well as determine any and all side effects that the drugs may cause. A failure to warn of these dangers, whether intentional or not, constitutes negligence on the part of the manufacturer.

The public already knows that Bayer misrepresented Yaz and Yasmin in its marketing campaign, because the FDA issued a warning, after which Bayer pulled its original ads and created new ones to correct the misinformation.

Getting the Compensation You Deserve

The FDA does not need to initiate a recall of all Yaz and Yasmin (and Ocella) drugs for you to obtain justice. Holding negligent pharmaceutical companies responsible is not just the FDA’s job. It is the right of any individual or family that has suffered illness, injury, or death due to the serious side effects of Yaz, Yasmin, or Ocella to pursue compensation for their losses. The committed Atlanta product liability lawyers at The Law Offices of Wayne Grant, P.C., find it inexcusable that Bayer should continue to profit on the suffering of others.
